The City of Falcon Heights has received a request to add an honorary name to a section of Larpenteur Avenue in honor of Philando Castile, who on July 6, 2016, was killed by a Saint Anthony police officer after a traffic stop.

At the December 16, 2020, council workshop the City Council was presented with an online petition from Change.org, created by the Philando Castile Relief Foundation, that had gathered over 20,400 signatures.

The petition for the honorary naming states, “Philando was a humanitarian who loved his community, he worked for the Saint Paul School District for over 11 years, he served lunch to over 500 students who he loved and adored.” The petition also states, “After the death of Philando, many community members poured out their love and support by creating a memorial space on Larpenteur for Philando.”  

The City Council directed staff to conduct on online survey to gather community input on the honorary naming request. The survey was available online and received over over 1,900 responses from both residents and non-residents. City Council will be reviewing the survey results and making a decision on the topic in February.
