Overview
The Minnesota Department of Human Rights is the state's civil rights enforcement agency. They uphold the civil rights of Minnesotans in all counties of the state by enforcing the Minnesota Human Rights Act. The Minnesota Department of Human Rights was founded in 1967 to protect the civil rights of Minnesotans through the Minnesota Human Rights Act.
The Minnesota Human Rights Act (MHRA) is the state law prohibiting discrimination in Minnesota and is enforced by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR). It is one of the strongest civil rights laws in the country. Over time, the civil rights law has changed, making it one of the strongest in the country.
The state law prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, public services, education, credit, and business based on protected class, such as: race, religion, disability, national origin, sex, marital status, familial status, age, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
The Minnesota Human Rights Act tasks the Department with three primary duties:
- Investigate charges of discrimination
- Equity and inclusion for state contracting
- Educate to reduce discrimination and disparate outcomes
